I'm getting old. (No, I am old). I have the feeling that decadence is setting into much of our culture...art, music, literature, films, etc. At first I assumed my observations were just those of a cranky old man and that the same impressions occur with every generation. However I decided to make an informal and quick analysis of song lyrics as a test. Here's what I did. I took the No.1 hit song on January 1 of each 5 year period from 1940 to 2010. I examined the first 10 (or so) lines of each song. To my mind there is a clear degradation of thought, diminuation of clarity and increased sparsity of language and communication as one moves from the lyrics of 1940 through to the lyrics of 2010.
Again I ask, "Is it just me?"
You have a look and tell me what you think.
2010 …..Tik Tok Lyrics
Wake up in the morning feeling like P Diddy
(Hey, what up girl?)
Grab my glasses, I'm out the door, I'm gonna hit this city
(Lets go)
Before I leave, brush my teeth with a bottle of Jack
'Cause when I leave for the night, I ain't coming back
I'm talking pedicure on our toes, toes
Trying on all our clothes, clothes
Boys blowing up our phones, phones
Drop-topping, playing our favorite CDs
Pulling up to the parties
Trying to get a little bit tipsy
2005….. Let Me Love You
Baby I just don't get it, do you enjoy being hurt?
I know you smelled the perfume, the make-up on his shirt
You don't believe his stories, you know that they're all lies
Bad as you are, you stick around and I just don't know why
If I was ya man
(Baby you)
Never worry 'bout
(What I do)
I'd be coming home
(Back to you)
(Every night, doin' you right)
You're the type of woman
(Deserves good things)
Fistful of diamonds
(Hand full of rings)
Baby, you're a star
(I just want to show you, you are)
2000 …..Smooth
Man it's a hot one
Like seven inches from the midday sun
Well I hear you whisper and the words melt everyone
But you stay so cool
My mu equita my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa
You're my reason for reason
The step in my groove
Yea
And if you say, "This life ain't good enough"
I would give my world to lift you up
I could change my life to better suit your mood
'Cause you're so smooth
1995…..On Bended Knee
Darlin' I can't explain
Where did we lose our way
Girl it's drivin' me insane
And I know I just need one more chance
To prove my love to you
If you come back to me
I'll guarantee
That I'll never let you go
Can we go back to the days our love was strong
Can you tell me how a perfect love goes wrong
Can somebody tell me how to get things back
The way they use to be
Oh God give me a reason
I'm down on bended knee
I'll never walk again until you come back to me
I'm down on bended knee
1990…..Another Day in Paradise
She calls out to the man on the street
"Sir can you help me?"
It's cold and I've no where to sleep,
is there somewhere you can tell me?
He walks on, doesn't look back
He pretends he can't hear her
Starts to whistle as he crosses the street
Seems embarrassed to be there
Oh, think twice, 'cause it's just another day for you
and me in paradise
Oh, think twice, 'cause it's just another day for you,
You and me in paradise
1985…..Like a Virgin
I made it through the wilderness
Somehow I made it through
Didn't know how lost I was
Until I found you
I was beat incomplete
I'd been had, I was sad and blue
But you made me feel
Yeah, you made me feel
Shiny and new
Chorus:
Like a virgin
Touched for the very first time
Like a virgin
When your heart beats (after first time, "With your heartbeat")
Next to mine
1980…..Please Don’t Go
Babe, I love you so
I want you to know
that I'm going to miss your love
the minute you walk out that door
so please don't go
don't go, don't go away
please don't go
don't go, I'm begging you to stay
If you live, at least in my life time
I had one dream come true
I was blessed to be loved
by someone as wonderful as you
1975…..Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes
Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
And she's gone
1970….Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head
Raindrops keep falling on my head
And just like the guy whose feet are too big for his bed
Nothin' seems to fit
Those raindrops are falling on my head, they keep falling
So I just did me some talkin' to the sun
And I said I didn't like the way he' got things done
Sleepin' on the job
Those raindrops are falling on my, head they keep falling
1965……I Feel Fine
Baby's good to me you know
She's happy as can be, you know
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
Baby says she's mine, you know
she tells me all the time, you now
She said so
I'm in love with her and I feel fine
I'm so glad that she's my little girls
She's so glad she's telling all the world
That her baby buys her things you know
He buys her diamond rings, you know
She said so
She's in love with me and I feel fine, mm
1960……El Paso
Out in the West Texas town of El Paso
I fell in love with a Mexican girl.
Night-time would find me in Rosa's cantina;
Music would play and Felina would whirl.
Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina,
Wicked and evil while casting a spell.
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden;
I was in love but in vain, I could tell.
1955….Let Me Go Lover
Oh, let me go
Let me go
Let me go, lover
Let me be
Set me free
From your spell
You made me weep
Cut me deep
I can't sleep, lover
I was cursed
From the first
Day I fell
1950…..I Can Dream, Can’t I?
I can see
No matter how near you'll be
You'll never belong to me
But I can dream, can't I
Can't I pretend
That I'm locked in the bend of your embrace
For dreams are just like wine
And I am drunk with mine
I'm aware
My heart is a sad affair
There's much disillusion there
But I can dream, can't I
Can't I adore you
Although we are oceans apart
I can't make you open your heart
But I can dream, can't I
1945….Don’t Fence Me In
Oh, give me land, lots of land under starry skies above,
Don't fence me in.
Let me ride through the wide open country that I love,
Don't fence me in.
Let me be by myself in the evenin' breeze,
And listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees,
Send me off forever but I ask you please,
Don't fence me in.
1940….I’ll Never Smile Again
I'll never smile again
Until I smile at you
I'll never laugh again
What good would it do
For tears would fill my eyes
My heart would realize
That our romance is through
I'll never love again
I'm so in love with you
I'll never thrill again
To somebody new
